Polder X Michael Graves Design Good Design Award

We are excited to announce that the Polder X Michael Graves Design Plush-Dry Expandable Dishrack has won a Good Design Award in 2022 from The Chicago Athenaeum!

Each year the Good Design award honors the industrial leaders and products in both manufacturing and design that have “chartered new directions for innovation and pushed the envelope for competitive products in the world marketplace.”

Polder looks to create “Solutions for Every Day Living.” What better way to create a solution for an everyday problem than by creating an innovative design for a kitchen dish rack. Dish racks are imperative for smaller household kitchens. The Plush Dry dish rack starts out compact for a smaller quantity of items and when more room is needed the rack extends on both ends! This innovation allows this dish rack to be compatible with an array of dish drying needs.

Good Design® was founded in Chicago in 1950 by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., Eero Saarinen, and Charles and Ray Eames.

Polder is a historic player in the retail dish rack category, with item placements at The Container Store, Bed Bath Beyond, Costco and many others in the specialty channel. We have sold and extended our primary rack design since its introduction in 2011 and built multiple other versions off of this. The product offering field has evolved and it is time to progress

our primary ‘hero’ design to the next stage in answering user lifestyles, competitive benchmarking and retail opportunities.

Polder’s branding desires to have a form that achieves an elegant, sensible aesthetic that intimates quality, long life, and sophisticated design. We have traditionally included a ‘leapfrog’ function innovation that adds to the value statement. The intention is to up-sell consumers from lower price point items and down sell them from the supposed better brand offerings. Depending on the accepted aesthetic and primary design, Polder will create alternate versions to fulfill desired retail price points.

According to the Good Design Awards: “The Plush Dry dish rack is compact in its primary form and manages smaller quantities of drying items while looking elegant enough to leave out as a home décor item. When the need for more space arises, the rack expands on both ends. The frame on one side pulls outward, and the microfiber mat flap folds down to create a flat, stable drying surface for glasses and other items. The frame on the other side rotates downward, and the microfiber flap on this side folds downward as well. The wire plate rack moves to the outer edge, leaving significant space in the center for larger items or general storage. The construction of the Plush-Dry dish rack employs a machine-washable microfiber mat as the primary drying surface vs. large plastic drain trays which angle excess water towards the sink and are less eco-friendly. This, plus a non-rusting aluminum frame offers users a solution that removes undesirable plastic trays and the need to be next to the sink to perform the drying function.”
